Hovig serves as group leader at the Institute for Cancer Research, the Norwegian Radium Hospital and is adjunct professor at the Department of Informatics, University of Oslo.

He is also co-PI and leader of bioinformatics in the Norwegian Cancer Genomics Consortium, partner in BigMed, a research project funded by the Research Council of Norway, as well as scientific head of the Bioinformatics Core Facility, funded by Helse Sør-Øst regional health organisation.

Hovig is also the leader of the Oslo node of Elixir Norway, part of the national node of the European bioinformatics infrastructure, funded by the Research Council of Norway and the EU.

Hovig is the author of 170 peer-reviewed scientific papers and co-founder of two Norwegian bioinformatics-based companies, PubGene and OncoImmunity. He has developed six international patents and is a member of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters.
